Kalina – The Provident Fund Commissioner, Mumbai has sent a notice to the Mumbai University seeking an explanation why contractual staff in the varsity are not entitled to PF, pension or leave benefits.

The PF commissioner has also sought information about the number of temporary, contractual and part tme staff working in the university. According to the staff, they have not been entitled to provident fund, pension fund schemes or leave benefits, for several years now.

The labour commissioner, Mumbai too has issued a show cause notice to the university seeking explanations regarding the alleged breach of labour laws in the varsity. The university, which is bound by law to reply to the notice within seven days. However, although the notice was sent on 6 February, the university officials have only recently received the notice. The Mumbai University Kamgar Sanghatana president Milind Tulaskar has been fighting on behalf of the contractual staff employed in the university for several years now.
