Due to the closure of schools in the state due to coronavirus outbreak, 25 per cent of the admissions categorised under the Right to Education (RTE) criteria have also been delayed. Earlier, the Directorate of Primary Education had issued a deadline of August 31, 2020, for the admission process to be completed, however, with that getting delayed, officials have now postponed the deadlines for admission until September 15, 2020.

As per the directives, Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE) permits 25 per cent of seats in private non-subsidized schools to be reserved for children who live under deprived conditions. The decision was drawn on March 17, 2020, by inviting online applications for admission this year, where a total of 1,15,460 seats were available under the RTE across 9,331 schools in the state. However, as per current records, only 53,687 seats have been secured so far.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students and families migrated to their village or other localities and were not be able to secure admission. Observing this, the RTE coordinators informed that they have decided to extend the term. Meanwhile, students on the waiting list will have to wait even longer for admissions.

Parents will be able to get admission for the students by taking care that the school will not be crowded as per the dates issued. If one is not able to go to the actual school, parents are allowed to get temporary admission by sending the required documents to the schools through WhatsApp and e-mail. Further, schools have been instructed to contact the parents of those who have not completed the admission process and ask them to confirm the same.
