SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai has reported a big increase in student enrolment this year. The number of students has almost doubled to 90,000 from 50,147 in the 2020–2021 academic year. With admissions for several courses still open, the total enrolment might increase more.
The data shows a steady rise in admissions over recent years. In 2021–2022, the university had 48,037 students, which increased to 84,331 in 2024–2025 before crossing the 90,000 mark this year. Education experts have noted that professional and technology-orientated courses have helped draw more students.
The report was presented during the university’s 75th convocation event on Tuesday, September 23. During the convocation, a total of 18,366 students were awarded degrees or certificates. This included 22 PhDs, 96 postgraduate diplomas, 2,656 master’s degrees, and 13,626 bachelor’s degrees.
During the ceremony, Professor and Vice Chancellor Ujwala Chakradeo highlighted that government schemes, scholarships and fee reimbursements have played a big role in attracting students. She also appreciated the university's faculty and administrative team for managing the growth.
Currently, SNDT Women's University operates six campuses, 36 university departments, 11 colleges, 13 associated colleges, eight centres, 380 affiliated colleges, and four autonomous colleges.
It is now expanding its infrastructure. It received a grant of INR 100 crore under the PM-USHA (Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) initiative for development. New centres have already been opened, and a sub-campus might soon come to Palghar.
