The Bombay High Court instructed the University of Mumbai to provide SVKM’s Mithibai College’s 1763 students their degree certificates which were earlier retained by the University. This incident occurred since the college which gained autonomous status in March 2018 altered its scoring scheme mid-course.

It was on 16th June’20 that as recommended by students, the college, apart from mentioning the grades also mentioned the marks attained in the 2019-20, academic session mark sheets. However, this wasn’t in line with the format followed by the University. On 3rd July, a division bench of Justice Nitin M Jamdar and Justice Chandrakant V Bhadang, however, came to the rescue of the students and stated that not providing the students with their certificates, is not only, illegal, but also prejudiced. This action on the University's part was seen to have a detrimental impact on students who looking to enter the professional arena or take up higher education.

The court took into consideration that exams were already conducted and that students have received their mark sheets. The bench, therefore held that the practical difficulties were not considered by the University of Mumbai and thus, not giving students their degree certificates at this juncture is prejudicial. It went to state that the reasons given by the University are neither legal nor valid.

Taking into consideration the above, the court has directed the University of Mumbai to issue the degree certificates of the students within four weeks from the date of order.
