From Friday, November 20, the re-examination of class 10 and 12 students are about to begin even though the number of candidates has witnessed a decline this year.

The annual re-examinations are usually held in the month of July whereas the results are announced in September. Moreover, the students also get admission in the subsequent class in the same academic year, however, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the examinations have been delayed this year.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) had earlier announced the re-examination of students who failed the Class 10 and 12 examinations in February-March. As per reports, 42,634 students of class 10 and 67,603 students of class 12 have registered for these re-examinations. Moreover, the exams are touted to be held at 672 centres across the state.

However, the number of students appearing for the examinations have decreased this year as compared to every year. About one to one and a half lakh students take the re-examinations. Both the 10th and 12th classes have seen a slight decline in the number of candidates due to the prolonged examinations and the threat of the pandemic.

On the other hand, Varsha Gaikwad, State Education Minister had earlier stated that Maharashtra is touted to resume schools and colleges for class 9 to 12 immediately after Diwali. Speaking about the same, Gaikwad added that the department aims to open schools and colleges for older students first so that the board examinations along with the academic year does not face any delay.

Furthermore, speaking about the pandemic, she added that the government does not want to hurry as it does not want to close schools immediately after reopening them because of the nature of the contagious disease. She also took the example of Andhra Pradesh and Delhi and vouched for a more staggered method of reopening schools.
