Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases across India are on a rise, and keeping this in mind, the preliminary examinations of the Union Public Service Commission has been postponed. As per the revised schedule, the exams will now be held on October 10, 2021, instead of June 27, 2021.

A press note was released by the department which said, ""Due to the prevailing conditions caused by the Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19), the Union Public Service Commission has deferred the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2021, which was scheduled to be held on 27th June, 2021. Now, this Examination will be held on 10th October, 2021."

These examinations are conducted in three stages every year. After candidate clears the first two stages, preliminary and main examinations, they are asked to appear for an interview, basis which officers are selected for Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) and other respected positions.

Meanwhile, both the state and central governments, over the last few weeks have cancelled or postponed many exams due to the increase of coronavirus cases.

Last year, the UPSC preliminary exams were held May 31 to October 4, 2020. So far, the main written exam has been conducted, however, Interviews have been halted against the backdrop of a growing outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

The examination scheduled on May 9, 2021, for the selection of enforcement officers for the Employees Provident Fund Association (EPFA) has also been postponed. The commission further said that the candidates will be informed about the new dates and schedule once they are decided. Meanwhile, officials have also postponed the registration for the Joint Medical Services Examination which was expected to begin May 5, 2021.
