The celebrated music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan who was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at a hospital in Kolkata breathed his last on Wednesday. The 55-year-old artist was on a ventilator and was receiving oxygen support.


"We tried our best but failed. He passed away at around 3:45 PM," an official of the private hospital where Khan was admitted said.


Hailing from Badayun in Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan, the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, began his musical journey with initial training under his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan.

Rashid Khan delivered his debut concert at the age of eleven, and in the subsequent year, 1978, he graced the stage at an ITC concert in Delhi. Subsequently, in April 1980, at the age of 14, Rashid Khan joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) in Calcutta, following the transition of his mentor, Nissar Hussain Khan, to the academy.


Apart from excelling in Hindustani vocals, Rashid Khan demonstrated his versatility in playback music, making significant contributions to blockbuster films like "My Name is Khan," "Jab We Met," "Isaaq," "Manto," "Mausam," "Bapi Bari Ja," "Kadambari," and "Mitin Masi." Known for his innovative style, he seamlessly merged Hindustani vocals with genres like Sufi and collaborated with Western instrumentalist icon Louis Banks. Additionally, he engaged in 'jugalbandis' with sitar artist Shahid Parvez.
