Late film director and art director Nitin Desai was honoured at the 96th Academy Awards. Tributes were paid to Nitin Desai and Korean actor Lee Sun Kyun at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony. The film 'Lagaan' went to the Oscars in 2002. Its art director was Nitin Chandrakant Desai. Lagaan made the final five in the Best Foreign Film category. He also did the art direction of the internationally famous film 'Slumdog Millionaire'. The film 'Slumdog Millionaire' has received the Oscar award in the Original Score category.
Nitin Desai also designed the sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films. Films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Bajirao Mastani were made by Nitin Desai. He also worked with filmmakers like Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Ashutosh Gowarikar.
Desai crafted sets for popular films such as Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Dostana, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Munna Bhai MBBS, Mission Kashmir, Josh, and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha. His final film was 'Panipat,' directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar. Additionally, he produced the serial 'Raja Shiv Chhatrapati'.
Last year, Nitin Desai took his life by hanging himself at ND Studio in Karjat.
