According to a latest data revealed by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), between January 14-16, a total of 726 injured birds were rescued during the kite flying festival in different parts of Mumbai by activists of various bird rescue centres.

This huge numbers were recorded despite several buildings in the city had not allowed to gather crowd on terraces amid the onset third wave of coronavirus.

As per the data, 726 injured birds rescued included crows, pigeons, koels, kites, gulls and even owls among others.

This shows that just for the temporary thrill of flying kites, we humans are causing severe damage to the avian species, said the board officer.

The officer further mentioned that if they were to add the number of bird fatalities after being cut by the sharp manja (thread) or getting trapped in the mesh of manja, the total count crosses 1,000.

It has also come to light that the board had appealed to people before the start of Makar Sankranti not to fly kites. There is some awareness in this regard, however, many others are still indulging in kite flying without realizing that their action can permanently damage the wings of birds, the officer was quoted as saying by TOI.

Bird camps at western suburbs like Kandivali and Malad reported the maximum number of bird injuries at 230 and 170 cases respectively.
