Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Thursday launched two projects to improve the water quality of Mirthi river. State Transport Minister Anil Parab was also present at the occasion. The projects will be handled by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The MMRDA will initiate a partnership with “UNTIL” to clean the marine debris floating in the Mithi river. The river is a confluence of tail-water discharges of the Powai and Vihar lakes. The Maharashtra government is taking efforts to clean the river.

"The government also plans to implement the processes of bioremediation and phytoremediation by bioengineering components," Thackeray tweeted.

Bioengineering, an application of engineering principles to the fields of biology and health care, is concerned with solving clinical problems by developing systems, equipment and device.

Bioremediation process is used to clean a polluted site. It is a process in which the microorganisms are introduced to consume and break down environmental pollutants. Meanwhile, Phytoremediation is a bioremediation process that uses destroy containments in water.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government announced that 600-acres of land in the Aarey colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will be reserved as a forest. This was decided in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

State Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray was present during the meeting with other officials. However, the area excludes the land on which the proposed car shed is supposed to come up. Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has raised an objection to the same saying that this is betrayal led by Shiv Sena.
