All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Imtiaz Jaleel was detained on Tuesday while on his way to a mosque to offer prayers. Jaleel was detained in Aurangabad by the police as he set out to defy the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the Maharashtra government.

The opposition parties have been demanding the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to allow the reopening of religious places in Maharashtra. Jaleel had earlier said that he would offer prayers at a mosque if the government doesn’t allow the religious places to open.

Jaleel, Maharashtra AIMIM President, was visiting the Shahganj mosque and was taken to the office of Aurangabad Police Commissioner. He had earlier appealed the Hindus to open their temples as well to mark the protest against the Maharashtra government.

On Monday, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar also protested outside the Vitthal temple in Pandharpur and was supported by Warkaris and their organisations. Later, he was allowed to visit the temple by the administration with 15 others.

The opposition parties in Maharashtra are trying to corner the Uddhav Thackeray government over their demand to reopen all places of worship. Republican Party of India (A) chief and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has also demanded the same.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 29 staged a statewide agitation to demand the reopening of temples. Now, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has also joined the opposition to demand the same. He has written a letter to the Chief Minister warning that they will forcibly open the temples if the government ignores the issue.
