Aaditya Thackeray, State Environmental Minister, speaking to the media elucidated on the strategies to make Mumbai the most active city amongst the C40 group in South and West Asia region.

This comes after the island city became the sixth Indian city earlier this month to be chosen as a member of the C40 cities which happens to be a global network of cities working towards to grapple climate change. In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, Thackeray addressed the crucial points for the fight against extreme weather events, droughts, extreme flooding and annual sea-level rise.

Moreover, speaking about the adaptation measures, Thackeray stated, “Our electric buses, (under construction) sewerage treatment plants, ongoing urban forestry are some of our mitigation measures. The pumping stations that we need now due to excessive monsoons, is one example of adaptation. However, we can’t just stop here and look inward. C40 will help us track global measures in various cities around the world to fight climate change,”

Mumbai which was earlier declared as a member city of the C40 group had the Shiv Sena MLA asserting that even other major cities in Maharashtra such as Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik have the capability to lead on topics relevant to climate change including mitigation measures.

C40 Cities brings together a total of 97 cities from around the world who pledge to take collective action against climate change to create a more sustainable and greener future. Moreover, mayors from the C40 Cities are also committed to delivering goals charted out by the Paris Agreement on a local level.
