As city celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi, IMD issues an orange alert

It has been pouring in and around Mumbai continuously since Thursday night. As the city gets into the festive mode to celebrate Ganeshotsav, IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and the rest of the Konkan region. 

According to the experts at IMD, the rains will continue to heavy in and around due to a well-marked low pressure on East MP and associated cyclonic circulation. There is also a high tide warning issued by the BMC. As per the warning, a high tide of 4.67 meters is expected at 2.14 pm.

Till Saturday morning, the Santacruz observatory recorded 990.5mm rainfall in the month of August, which is the highest that the city has got in nine years. The earlier highest rainfall was recorded in August 2010 when the city received 1,036.5mm of rainfall. The rain activity in and around Mumbai are expected to continue till August 24 or 25

Many parts of the Mumbai received heavy to very heavy rain (6am-6pm) on Friday. Here is how much rainfall was recorded in various parts of MMR on Friday as per IMD.

On Thursday, Tansa lake started to overflow, which is the fourth water body to overflow. It has been raining on and off in and around Mumbai since the beginning of this week. Tansa started to overflow since 7:05 pm on Thursday.

Mumbai’s lake levels are at 90.88 per cent as on Friday morning. In comparison, the water level was at 94.91 per cent on the same day in 2019, and 93.91 per cent in 2018. Given the shortfall in the water in the catchment area, BMC had announced a 20 per cent water cut on August 5. With the rains significantly improving in this week, there has been a demand for lifting the said water cut.

While the alert has been upgraded, the rains have taken a backseat in Mumbai. While some parts continue to experience on and rain, but as opposed to Friday its intensity has decreased. According to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet, "Mumbai's weather will remain pleasant with patchy showers. Most parts of Maharashtra will continue to enjoy comfortable weather with light to moderate rain".
