To create a more urban forest in Mumbai, the garden department is looking for plots from other departments of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other private entities have expressed interest to carry out this initiative through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) but due to the lack of available space, it has restricted the garden department to develop more urban forests.

It was around two years back that the civic body's forest department had taken up the initiative to plant more than four lakh trees under urban forest production at 64 places. They have completed the process in 45 places wherein more than two-and-a-half-lakh trees have grown in these green spaces.

This Miyawaki method of afforestation is gaining popularity around the world. The idea to plant trees in large numbers in a small space was originated from Japan. Now other cities are adopting the same method.

An official, while citing an example, said that there is land belonging to the hydraulic engineering department of civic administration which is lying unused because a majority of the reservoirs are underground. They can do afforestation in such spaces; however, they can't say if the method is successful since it is new.

Recently, the Consul General of Japan praised BMC for its efforts in starting the Miyawaki project. He has also expressed his intention of organising a bonsai and ikebana exhibition in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Maharashtra has won the Inspiring Regional Leadership award at the inaugural Leadership Awards of the Under2 Coalition.
