With environmental initiatives gaining traction in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) along with other authorities has been undertaking trailblazing steps to ensure that Mumbai becomes environment friendly. Here is a list of these innovative actions undertaken.
BEST Buses To Be 100% Electric By 2028
The BEST currently has 386 EV buses and they are looking at converting 50% of the fleet to electric by 2023 & 100% by 2028. The BMC along with the state environment ministry and the World Resources Institute are coming together for this initiative.
Electric Vehicles
Aaditya Thackeray, the state environment minister initiated the Maharashtra Electric Vehicles Policy through which vehicles that run on the battery are being promoted. The first electric vehicle charging point was inaugurated in August, multiple charging stations have been installed across Mumbai in just 2 months.
Sustainable Waste Management
BMC is developing a city-level solid waste management plan which could enable decentralization at the ward level. The civic authority is also looking to acquire electric vehicles for garbage transportation by the Solid Waste Management department.
Enhancing Biodiversity
Mumbai recently constituted a biodiversity management committee and joined the Cities4Forests initiative to increase green cover in vulnerable areas. An interactive biodiversity map of the city also highlights ingenious flora and fauna.
Mitigating Flooding Risks
In the ‘Majhi Vasundhara’ campaign, the BMC is encouraging rainwater harvesting to curtail run-off and revive groundwater levels.
