Mumbai is set to witness a citywide cleanliness drive from January to December 2026 called “Swachhata Manthan”. This comes after Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar suggested increasing citizen participation in keeping the city clean during the Mumbai BJP’s “Aawaaz Mumbaikarancha, Sankalp Bhajapacha” campaign.

It will include multiple categories, such as administrative wards, commercial establishments, residential complexes, schools, hospitals, gardens, marketplaces, restaurants, slum areas, communal lavatories, roads, and open spaces. Participants are encouraged to adopt neighbourhoods or their immediate surroundings to promote cleanliness.

The competition will offer prizes for first, second, and third place in each category. As per reports, most categories will award up to INR 15 lakh, while the top prize for the cleanest administrative ward is set at INR 50 lakh. The total prize money for the year-long contest will amount to INR 4.2 crore.

Details regarding the application process, award categories, and other guidelines will be shared by the BMC soon. An independent agency will conduct evaluations, and a grand award ceremony will take place in December 2026 with the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and other dignitaries present.

Mumbai BJP MLA Ameet Satam welcomed the BMC’s decision. Helpful recommendations from citizens would be put into action in the coming days.

Satam recently engaged with people from various walks of life, including professionals, coolies, dabbawalas, youth, rickshaw drivers, and movie stars, to collect grassroots suggestions. The campaign received 265,738 ideas, and 145,616 citizens volunteered to participate in building a cleaner Mumbai.
