Despite the Air Pollution Mitigation Plan launched seven months ago, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to gather statistics on construction sites that were issued stop work notifications for failing to meet building work requirements.

In response to a directive from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the BMC held a meeting on Monday, October 23 to discuss the city's worsening air quality. The meeting aimed to understand the timeline for implementing measures discussed in a previous meeting at the civic offices.

Despite expectations, the civic body has delayed the release of new dust mitigation plans scheduled on the same day as declared by the BMC commissioner and state-appointed administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal. The guidelines and control measures drafted are awaiting approval from higher authorities. Once approved, formal action will be taken against those who do not comply.

The BMC also engaged in talks with various stakeholders from the construction sector. However, they could not reach to a conclusion on the final standards.

Chahal also verbally instructed that all construction sites would install tin and metal sheets ranging from 25 to 35 feet high to prevent dust displacement.

The BMC plans to deploy 50 teams in each of the city's 24 civic wards. These teams will conduct random inspections at construction sites to ensure adherence to dust control protocols.
