According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) gardens department claimed that it had trimmed over 49,167 trees as part of its pre-monsoon work. The department reportedly surveyed nearly 1.50 lakh roadside trees of which it found that 1.02 lakh needed trimming.
Based on accounts, the BMC has also issued notices to 8,506 government as well as private premises for tree trimming in their areas. The department's survey found that 1.02 lakh trees are in dangerous condition. These they believe could fall during heavy rain or wind.
BMC officials have been quoted in narratives elaborating on how the remaining tree's trimming will be finished before the monsoon by means of advanced machines.
It has been reported that the civic authority also found 473 dead and dangerous trees across Mumbai. Till now, it is said to have removed 444 of them.
Likewise, data from the BMC suggests that there are 1.85 lakh roadside trees in its jurisdiction. In accordance with a tree census undertaken in 2014, the city has 29.75 lakh trees. From this, while 10.67 lakh are on government premises, 15.51 lakh trees are in private properties.
On the other hand, the BMC has decided to augment the capacity of dewatering pumps on the railway tracks to avert waterlogging issues during monsoon.
