The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the installation of mechanical rake screens to remove thrash and other floating objects at the nullah that is attached to the Lovegrove Stormwater Pumping Drain in Worli. The civic body has received the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) for this purpose.

This screen will catch plastic waste and other thrash to make sure they don’t choke out the pumping station during the monsoons. This particular pumping station is used to drain out excess water during monsoons from south-central Mumbai which is then directed to the Arabian Sea.
The MCZMA also announced that it will defer the proposal by the state’s harbour engineering division to give Dadar beach a makeover.

The proposal consisted of stepped ghats for the beach, staircases for the promenade, an immersion ramp, play areas including sandpits and a volleyball court, among other inclusions. The MCZMA said that this project was shelved as they couldn’t obtain enough information on the CRZ status of the proposed activities.
The MCZMA also rejected a different proposal made by Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) for the creation of a passenger jetty and allied facilities at Guhagar beach in Ratnagiri district. This proposal was rejected after it was learnt that the proposed construction area also happens to be a turtle breeding spot.
The MMB has previously seen other proposals rejected in regions like Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, and others as the MCZMA said that it didn’t receive the necessary details on the projects.
