In an environmental move, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has transported sand from the Mahim beach to cover 30,000 sq ft of land on the coastline at Mahim Reti Bunder.

According to a report by Mumbai Mirror, the BMC has already covered the area with a foot of sand and plans to raise the height of sand over by another two feet. Moreover, this ecological move was followed by the plantation of 250 Suru trees on the beach which are suitable for sandy soil near the seashore. This tree is usually planted throughout the tropics, especially for being able to provide timber whilst growing on sandy soils near the coast, therefore, also providing shelter and protection for the soil.

The Mahim beach had earlier witnessed the return of migratory birds after two years of constant clean-up by citizen resident groups. The resurrection of the beach was gradually observed under the care of husband-wife duo Indranil Sengupta and Rabia Tewari, along with the Koli community and other Mahim residents who worked consistently from September 2017 to remove 1,000 tonnes of garbage.

The majority of the waste that used to end up on the Mahim Beach originated from the Mithi River given that the river meets the sea near Mahim. Moreover, 90 per cent of the waste that washed up on Mahim’s shores were reportedly plastic.
