Minister of Tourism and Environment for the government of Maharashtra Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated the localized waste-to-energy plant developed on a deserted plot at Keshvrao Khade near Haji Ali today, September 3.

Taking it to Twitter, Aaditya Thackeray said that with this inauguration, it becomes the first small-scale plants near Haji Ali which can process 2 metric tonnes or 2,000 kg of wet waste per day.

The plant can generate 80 to 110 cubic meters of gas per day and is spread over 2000 square feet. About 7,500 metric tonnes of waste is produced on daily basis in Mumbai. As a necessary measure the civic body has reduced around 1,000 metric tonnes of garbage in recent years. Out of the 7,500 tonnes of waste around 70 percent is wet waste.

The plan for the new waste to energy plant will require about 45 units of electricity and 2000 litres of water per day to process 2000 kg of wet waste.

“The idea is to collect wet waste from the ward, especially from restaurants and eateries, which will reduce BMC’s load to transport it to the dumping ground. The energy generated will be used for street lighting of the area and lighting of a nearby garden," said Assistant Municipal Commissioner of D ward Prashant Gaikwad while addressing the media.

The project is set to be backed by the central government’s biotechnology department and will be operated on zero waste, zero emission concept.
