Amid rising concerns over deteriorating air quality in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to implement new and strict rules to prevent pollution.

Now, it will be mandatory to erect a 30-foot wall instead of a 21-foot wall at the construction site, and install a pollution measuring device at the construction site.

This decision comes at a time when there is a risk of increasing air pollution during four months of winters season.

The civic body has blamed constructions for the pollution in Mumbai. There are nearly 5000 constructions in Mumbai currently. The dust from the construction sites spreads in the air causing pollution. Therefore, it has been made mandatory for the concerned developers to strictly implement the regulations at the construction sites.

Task forces have been appointed at the level of municipal department offices to control dust. Three task forces have been appointed in each department, one each for three subjects. A fine of INR 10,000 to 20,000 and a 'stop work' notice will be issued if found dumping debris on open spaces.

For this, the team will keep an eye on all the 24 wards. Nearly, 5000 CCTV cameras installed across Mumbai by the emergency department and the police will now be keeping an eye on the road traffic, garbage throwers.

List of measures to curb air pollution:

Installing dust screens on the exterior of buildings

Spraying water on the dustproof screen and in the open space

Washing the wheels of vehicles while leaving the construction site

Covering all vehicles transporting scrap, construction, waste

Installation of netting for safety from falling debris during construction

Obtaining no-obligation certificate from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board while approving RMC plant
