The decision to cut 2700 trees in Aarey for the construction of Metro 3 car shed has caused quite a furor. At a recent event chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was asked his opinion regarding chopping of these trees in Aarey and he was in favour of this move. He added that the Supreme Court has said that they are not forest trees and chopping trees and forest being destroyed is just a misconception.

He was speaking at the India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) leadership series held at NSCI in Worli and he was asked by a student whether he thought this decision of cutting trees was right or not. Answering the same, he said, “This matter had gone up to the Supreme Court and the apex court too has said that what the state government doing is right. The land where the trees are being cut is not a forest land. With the underground Metro project, we will be able to mitigate carbon footprint to an extent that we would have needed 2 crore full-grown trees otherwise”.

He went on to add, “Of the 2700 trees, some 500 trees will be replanted and a few trees will be cut against which we will plant 3,000 full grown trees. The state is trying to strike a balance between development and environment. It is a misconception the government is destroying forest and trees are getting chopped. Even I am an environmentalist and felling every single tree pains me”.

However, the other political parties are against this decision. Congress has filed an affidavit against this move. Shiv Sena has also joined the opposition against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Tree Authority decision to cut 2,700 trees in Aarey Colony for the construction of Metro 3 car shed. Aditya Thackeray is often seen tweeting against cutting of these trees and he recently even penned an opinion piece in a leading daily questioning this move.
