As per recent rainfall data, Mumbai received 493.1 mm and 840.7 mm of rain in June and July respectively. In 2021, Mumbai has seen 156 per cent more rain than the average of June and July months.  However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that heavy or excess rainfall in Mumbai is not an uncommon occurrence.

IMD says that Mumbai received 25 per cent more rainfall in four of the last five years. It’s worth noting that the cumulative monsoon rainfall went past 160 per cent in 2019 and 2020.

The IMD’s observatory in Santa Cruz reported over 200 mm of rainfall on three days this year alone. Data illustrates that the cumulative rainfall in Mumbai is also seeing an increase due to extremely heavy rains over a short period of time.

Mumbai witnessed 2,084 mm of rainfall until the end of July this year, making up for nearly 90 per cent of the expected monsoon showers.

Jayanta Sarkar, the Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai said, “This kind of feature is expected due to the climate change scenario. Instances of excess rainfall in a short span of time are on the rise. But to arrive at any sort of conclusion, we need a thorough study of at least 30 years of data.”

A rainfall comparison from 1981 to 2010 showed that Mumbai received 2,260 mm of rainfall on average between June and September during each monsoon season.
