The India Meteorological department (IMD) in its five-day forecast has alerted on light to moderate rain from June 7-10 in parts of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar.

IMD, in an alert late on Tuesday evening, June 6, said, “Deep depression intensified into cyclonic storm Biparjoy over east-central Arabian Sea at 1730 hours IST. To move nearly northwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.”

The weather department has also predicted strong winds and high waves along the Mumbai coast. Scattered rains are expected all over Maharashtra with Mumbai and Pune likely to receive some intense rainfall from 8 to 10 June.

Moreover, heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Konkan regions is expected over the weekend, that is Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 as the low-pressure area over the Arabian sea is likely to intensify into a depression by Friday evening, June 9. However, IMD has not yet confirmed whether the rains this weekend are due to the impact of cyclone Maha, which coincides with the timing of rainfall.

Mumbai’s normal monsoon onset date is June 11. But with onset not having happened over Kerala yet, the city’s wait could get longer. However, these rains will bring relief from heat wave that has been sweeping across the state.
