The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning of heat wave conditions, which are likely to prevail at isolated areas in the city, Thane and Raigad for at least two days, that is Monday, March 14 and Tuesday, March 15.

IMD officials said that these conditions are likely to continue for next 3 to 4 days.

This development came after recording abnormally high temperatures being witnessed over the weekend.

However, warm conditions continued for the consecutive day in the city on Monday, March 14, with the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recording a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees, which is nearly six degrees above normal. Whereas Colaba recorded 37.6 degrees Celsius, 6.1 degree Celsius above normal.

Besides, the weather department, in its seven-day forecast for Mumbai, alerted that the city temperatures might soar to 39 degrees.

A day earlier, on Sunday, March 13, also Mumbaikars and Thanekars were reeling under heatwaves during the day time as the city recorded 38.6 degrees Celsius day temperature.

Moreover, this is the third time this month that Mumbai’s maximum temperature crossed the 38-degree mark, after touching 38.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, March 12.

Additionally, the minimum or the night temperature is also forecast to rise to 24 degrees for the next two days.

The maximum daytime temperature in March last year was 40.9 degrees Celsius (on March 28).

According to IMD, heat wave warnings are issued when the temperature of any coastal station reaches 37 degrees and the departure from normal is between 4.5 to 6.4 degrees. When both these conditions are met for a coastal station like Mumbai and when it persists for two days at more than one station then a heat wave is declared for that region.

Similarly, IMD has issued a yellow alert with a warning of a heatwave in north Konkan. The IMD said that the maximum temperatures can go up to 37 and 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of Vidarbha, Marthwada and north Madhya Maharashtra.
