Mumbai experienced mild drizzle and thunderstorms in isolated areas during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The rain was caused by the interplay of dry and moist winds.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain was below the detectable limit, despite its modest intensity.

The recent mild drizzle and thunderstorms in Mumbai may be a prelude to more rain in the coming days.

The IMD officials noted that Mumbai may experience rain between March 16 and 17, along with thunderstorms and lightning. Areas of interior Maharashtra, including Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Aurangabad, may also witness hailstorms.

The weather department representatives predicted that isolated areas of Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra may get rain in the next three to four days. The higher daytime temperatures in the state caused an invasion of moisture resulting in light drizzle.

On Tuesday, March 14, temperatures were four degrees above average, with Mumbai's IMD observatory in Santacruz and Colaba recording 36.8 degrees and 35.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The minimum temperature in the city was also higher than average at 24.4 degree Celsius and 24.5 degrees Celsius.

However, Mumbai recorded ‘poor’ air quality index (AQI) at 225 as of 9 am on Wednesday, March 15, as per SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research).

The PM2.5 and PM10 levels stood at 225 and 154 units, respectively.
