Public wealth destroyed due to individual activism says BMC Chief

In a recent Climate Crisis Conclave that was organised by Mumbai First, Municipal Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi said that, that public wealth has been “actively constrained and literally destroyed”.

Pradeshi said, "This is indeed a very timely conference on the climate crisis. We are just one world now and the crisis brings the world even closer. I always believe in the concept of 'thinking globally and acting locally'. I have taken up various developmental projects like the Coastal Road keeping the climate adaptation in mind but individual activism has slowed down the process with several Public Interest Litigations (PILs). These cases have been taken up to the Supreme Court wherein we have won the case and there were new PILs that were filed. All of this slows down the development of the city."

He went on to explain that the public transport projects are extensive and they require a lot of collective action by state and corporation. These projects are blocked at every point, not for the want of funds but by too much discussion and too public interest litigation which leads to it going back and forth.

Talking about the impact the climate change has had on Mumbai, Praveen Pardeshi said, "We need to make Mumbai city a circular economy. That’s good for infrastructure and while doing this trying to enhance climate resilience. I do acknowledge the fact that we are not that well prepared because we do not consider the quantitative climate risk into our infrastructure. However, further developments will be done keeping this in mind. Then there’s governance and how governance can nudge people towards doing the things we don’t do despite knowing what we have to do. We had announced that housing societies who segregate their waste will have a 10 per cent Property Tax rebate which has been implemented by Marathon Era Cooperative Housing society in Lower Parel. Moreover, they are not just segregating the waste but also recycling it."
