Aarey colony is reporting a number of leopard attacks since the last few weeks. Reportedly, there were six leopard attacks in the past fortnight. To prevent human-animal conflict, awareness posters on how to avoid leopards are put up inside the Aarey colony in Mumbai.

Intekhab Farooqui, a Shiv Sena party member and social activist, while talking to the media, said that they have started putting up awareness and educational posters in the Aarey colony. The purpose is to make the locals aware, and they can use this basic knowledge to avoid leopard attacks.

He further added that it has become a green zone since leopards are now seen more frequently. They are seen coming out of the adjoining Sanjay Gandhi National Park, he added further. The awareness posters are in both Marathi and English languages so that it becomes easier for people to read and understand.

Farooqui said that parents should make sure that their children stay home after 7 PM. Instruction on the poster also read that one must not panic when they come face-to-face with a leopard. It added that they must either clap their hands, stand straight, or hit a stick on the ground.

While commenting on the situation, activist Amrita Bhattacharjee said that illegal construction inside Aarey, cutting of trees, etc., have led to an increase of human numbers in the green zone. Therefore, there are more leopard attacks taking place.
