State bans plastic bags; announces three-months of imprisonment on using the same

Environment minister Ramdas Kadam has announced the ban on plastic bags and the same will be implemented from Gudi Padwa onwards. He made the statement in the legislative assembly. He added that people will not be able to use thermocol-made plastic plates in any of the public evets. Also, whoever is caught using plastic bags will be fined ₹25,000 and will also have to serve three months in jail.

The decision of banning plastic and plastic-made bags, thermocol-made things and the plastic pouch was passed in the legislative assembly.


Things which have been exempted from the plastic ban


  • Plastic use for packing medicines 

  • Plastics used for forest and horticulture

However, manufacturers will also have to specify what these products will be used for. The state has also permitted to use plastic bags of more than 50 microns for milk packaging. The state has made it mandatory to publish the recycle information on the bag. Also, milk dairies have been advised to charge less than 50 paise each while recycling the bags.
