Aaditya Thackeray, Maharashtra Environment Minister announced that the state has joined the United Nations (UN)-backed 'Race to Resilience' campaign. He made this statement in an interview with COP TV (an arm of COP26). This UN-backed campaign is a sister concern of the 'Race to Zero' campaign.

As per the government officials, this move is significant for the state. Of late, Maharashtra government has incurred losses worth 2 billion USD, states reports. The amount was paid as a direct compensation for people and parties impacted by extreme weather events such as floods, drought and crop failures.

On Tuesday, November 9, the state environment department issued a statement in which they mentioned that the UN campaign lays its focus on helping the most vulnerable, frontline communities to build resilience. Campaign will also help them to adapt to the physical impacts of climate change like extreme heat, drought, flooding and sea-level rise in three area types: urban, rural and coastal.

Aaditya Thackeray said that by joining this campaign, the state aims to be a leading example for regional governments.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has won the Inspiring Regional Leadership award at the inaugural Leadership Awards of the Under2 Coalition.
