After a brief lull over the past few days, the southwest monsoon has become active again across several parts of Maharashtra since Monday, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall to many regions. The renewed spell has offered much-needed relief to residents and farmers alike, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting intensified rainfall across parts of the state over the next five days.
The IMD has issued Orange Alerts for areas expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Yellow Alerts have been announced for districts likely to witness thunderstorms and moderate to heavy showers. Weather experts believe the state is set to receive widespread and beneficial rainfall during the first week of July.
Rainfall during June remained below the seasonal average across Maharashtra, raising concerns among farmers and residents. However, the recent revival of monsoon activity has increased hopes for improved rainfall during July.
According to meteorologists, the lack of favourable weather systems had weakened monsoon activity over the state in recent weeks, limiting rainfall to only a few regions. The current strengthening is being attributed to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) entering its second phase, along with the development of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, both of which are expected to enhance rainfall over Maharashtra in the coming days.
At present, rainfall is being recorded across much of the Konkan coast, Vidarbha, and several other parts of the state. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Konkan and Vidarbha over the next few days, while parts of Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are also expected to receive showers, though rainfall intensity may remain comparatively lower in some areas.
Orange Alert for Wednesday
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Ratnagiri, Raigad, Mumbai, Thane, the ghat areas of Kolhapur and Satara, as well as the Vidarbha districts of Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely.
Yellow Alert for Wednesday
A Yellow Alert has been issued for Sindhudurg, Palghar, Pune and its ghat areas, Ahilyanagar, Beed, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Solapur, Dharashiv, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, Washim, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia, where thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall are expected.
