Citizens have responded well to the animal adoption scheme implemented by Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The park in Borivali has stated that the number of animals sought, is more than the number of the animals themselves.

There are five tigers, 13 leopards, two lions in the national park. 7,14 and 3 applications have been received for them respectively. Of these, eight leopards and two tigers have been adopted a few months ago. Five applications have been received for three rusty-spotted cats. Applications have also been received for three nilgais, nine Indian muntjac and 35 deers.

Tigers and lions have been awaiting adoption for the last two years. Certificates are issued to animal adopters and are also attached to animal cages. Every 15 days, the adopter is allowed to see the animal from a distance.

The scheme was launched in December 2013. This scheme is helping to contribute to the cost of raising animals, with citizens also getting the chance to express their love for wildlife. Initially, the scheme did not get much publicity. Thus, some recognized faces were roped in to gain traction.

The animals were adopted by some renowned individuals like Ramdas Athawale, politicians like Pratap Sarnaik, actors like Sumeet Raghavan. However, a circular was issued a few days ago to make the scheme known to the general public. The new applications include revered congregations like director Shyam Benegal along with other animal lovers.
