For the first time ever in the post-monsoon season, air quality in Mumbai deteriorated for the three consecutive days.

Moreover, it is pertinent to note that the financial capital city has recorded an AQI worse than Delhi.

As on 6 am today, Wednesday, October 18, Mumbai's overall air quality index (AQI) stood at 113 (moderate) in comparison to Delhi’s 83 (Satisfactory). Similarly, a day earlier, on Tuesday, October 17, the city’s AQI was at 113, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

Meanwhile, the air quality around the city's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) area was recorded as 'very poor' and a health advisory was issued.

Yesterday, several parts of Mumbai including Andheri, Mazgaon and Navi Mumbai even recorded AQI in the 'poor' category.

Experts attribute the dust pollution to cold wind blowing in from the Western Ghats hitting warmer air along the coast. As a result, warmer air with dust and smoke remained stagnant over the coastal Mumbai.

As per SAFAR, the air quality at Kalanagar in Bandra Kurla area touched 178. Moderate air was recorded in areas like Worli, Bhandup, Borivali with AQI at 139, 131, 135 respectively. Areas like Deonar recorded ‘poor’ air with AQI at 216, Chembur at 213, as per CPCB data.

Though the overall air quality in Mumbai was ‘moderate’ some areas also recorded ‘very poor’ category air. Andheri recorded AQI of 346, Navi Mumbai saw AQI at 317, Mazgaon saw AQI at 307, as per SAFAR 9 am data.

As per the Central Pollution Control Board, areas like Vile Parle West recorded AQI at 331, Chakala Andheri East recorded AQI at 343, as per CPCB data.

Meanwhile, on Monday, October 16, Mumbai’s AQI was recorded at 115.
