According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai’s rainfall deficit for August stood at 46 per cent on Monday, August 30.

As per reports, the city has clocked 288.8mm of rain as against the monthly normal of 531.3mm. Moreover, authorities have attributed the deficit to the weakening of monsoon winds but clarified that there are higher chances of rain for the city and its surrounding areas during the next fortnight.

Meanwhile, earlier on Monday, a light downpour was witnessed across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with IMD’s observatory in Santacruz recording 1mm of rain up to 5:30 pm. In addition, most of the monitoring stations across the city, Thane and Navi Mumbai witnessed between 1 and 5mm of downpour during the same period.

Furthermore, the IMD had earlier informed that moderate rains are expected from August 20 to September 2. Since the beginning of August, Mumbai city, suburbs, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg districts have received very little rainfall.

Temperatures have also risen due to the harsh weather and occasional light winds. The Mumbai suburbs recorded a low of 26.5 degrees Celsius and a high of 31.8 degrees Celsius a few days ago. Both showed an increase of 2 degrees compared to the average. The two consecutive months of June and July received above-average rainfall. However, with the first 20 days of August dry, the rains are expected to return.
