The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, September 6, predicted a possibility of rains along with stormy winds across Maharashtra for the next two days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, September 6, predicted a possibility of rains along with stormy winds across Maharashtra for the next two days.

Accordingly, light shower, interspersed with moderate spells are expected today, September 7.

However, the intensity of the rain is expected to increase from September 8, while there are chances of strong spell of showers in several districts as per the weather department.

Meanwhile, after a brief dry spell, moderate to heavy rains are likely over Mumbai between September 8-12. Besides, it has come to light that the intensity and spread of weather activity will be more between September 9-11. During this wet spell, city may receive as much as 200 mm of rainfall.

September is the least rainy monsoon month for Mumbai. Average monthly rainfall based on 30 years’ data (1990-2020) stands at 383.5mm. The variability is very large in the closing month of monsoon.

In September 2018, the city failed to reach even three-digit mark and measured only 73.1mm rainfall. On the contrary, September 2019 was the rainiest on record with 1115.7mm. 

If reports are to be believed, September 2022 have experienced mostly light and patchy rains, except day before when Santacruz recorded 94mm of rainfall. Whereas Colaba observatory measured single digit 24hr rainfall on Sunday, September 4. 

Though, the monsoon season is accounted for till September 30, Mumbai continues with retreating monsoon showers till October mid and sometimes even later.
