On Saturday, January 22, Mumbai witnessed light rainfall which was followed by the city layered with a sheet of dust on Sunday, January 23 owing to the occasional dust-raising winds, reports stated.

According to accounts, due to this phenomenon, the visibility was reduced and the city saw its lowest January day temperatures in 10 years. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Santacruz observatory registered a maximum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius that is stated to be nearly seven degrees under the normal.

Based on accounts, officials at the IMD remarked that the dust storm came from Balochistan, Pakistan. Added that it was caused by a westerly trough along with humid weather. They elaborated on how it moved eastward affecting Saurashtra and then reached parts of north Konkan that included Mumbai.

This is claimed to be a short term phenomenon and does not stay for too long explained the experts. The weather bureau mentioned that a prediction had already been given that because of the dust, Mumbai could experience a hazy day with low visibility.

On the other hand, in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, light rainfall was registered by both the Colaba and Santacruz observatory. The maximum temperature registered at Colaba and Santacruz was 24 degrees Celsius and 23.8 degrees Celsius respectively. These were 5.8 degrees and 6.9 degrees under normal.

On Sunday, the night temperature recorded by both observatories was 21.6 degrees and 21 degrees consequently. The coming week is predicted to be cool with minimum temperatures falling to 15 degrees Celsius.
