Mumbai is bracing for some of its coldest weather this winter. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the night temperatures could drop as low as 12-13°C in the upcoming week’s Sunday and Monday.

This development came at a time when daytime temperatures in Mumbai are not only lower than other cities in the region, such as Nashik and Pune, but they are also below average for this time of year.

According to weather experts, the passing of a western disturbance, followed by head-on winds from north India, is the cause of the abnormally chilly temperatures. Explaining further, experts stated that although the temperature is slightly below average, it cannot be considered a "cold wave". A cold wave can only be proclaimed when the temperature is -4.5 degrees below average.

However, by the last week of January or the upcoming weekend, temperatures are likely to get cooler again, predict meteorologists and experts.

Experts exclaimed that the January 27 western disturbance will be stronger than the previous three. This will lead to the temperature dropping further. It is to be noted that for tomorrow, January 26, the minimum temperature will continue to hover between 14 and 15 degrees Celsius. Later under the influence of western disturbance, the temperature is likely to drop further to 13 degrees Celsius from January 27.

The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) reported that the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) remained "poor" on Tuesday, January 24.

The AQI in the Chembur neighborhood was particularly concerning, with an AQI of 322, classified as "extremely poor," compared to Colaba's AQI of 262, classified as "poor." The AQI in Andheri was 252, while the AQI at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) was 346.
