Mumbai and its neighbouring cities Thane and Navi Mumbai, in the last 24 hours, witnessed heavy showers which abated the three-digit rainfall. A similar downpour is expected on Tuesday, August 9, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert.

However, from Wednesday onwards, August 10, Mumbai is expected to receive moderate rain.

Until 5:30 am today, August 9, Mumbai's Santacruz recorded 86 mm of rains, according to Skymet. On the other hand, Colaba saw 57 mm of rains in the same time frame.

It is pertinent to note that Mumbai rains have been on the calmer side for the past few days with heavy to very heavy rains remaining far away from the city.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, forecast indicates moderate to heavy rain in city and suburbs and very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

As per IMD, intense to very intense rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely at isolated places in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Palghar today.

With intense clouds forming around the south and central Mumbai, heavy rains were recorded from south Mumbai to Goregaon in the north. Mulund and Navi Mumbai areas also witnessed heavy spells of rain. There have been waterlogging and electricity cut at several parts of the city.

Moreover, high tides were hit at the Marine Drive amid heavy rainfall with gusty winds. Residents wade through water-logged roads in Thane’s Bhiwandi while local trains on central railways have been running late for 10-15 days.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is predicted over the north coast of Maharashtra and some parts of north Mumbai for the next 12 hours.

Owing to the presence of Mix Temperature Control over West of Mumbai, very heavy rainfall is expected over west Maharashtra and Mumbai in the next 24-36 hours.

The weather forecasting agency has issued a red alert for ghat regions around Pune on Tuesday and predicted moderate rainfall for Pune city. The IMD said that the catchment areas of the dams are likely to get good rainfall in the next few days.

Besides, models indicate that conditions are favourable for the entire Konkan region to have heavy rains for the next three days, i.e. till August 10. Right from Palghar, Thane and right down to Sindhudurg, Mahabaleshwar, Ratnagiri, Mumbai and Alibaug may see heavy to very heavy rainfall.
