The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a warning for Mumbai from yellow alert, which indicates heavy rainfall, to orange alert, which indicates very heavy rainfall, in this week.

In addition, a fishermen's warning has also been given for the north and south coasts of Maharashtra.

Mumbai will remain on “orange" alert from Monday, August 8, till Thursday, August 11, IMD said in its five-day district forecast. Neighbouring Palghar and Thane district will also be on ‘orange’ alert during the same period.

It is pertinent to note that this development came on the day heavy rains made a comeback in Mumbai after a dry spell over the past few days.

Apart from Mumbai, the weather office said in its previous bulletin has warned of red alert in Pune, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Satara for today.

Strong gusty winds are expected over the coast of Maharashtra with the wind speed reaching up to 65 kmph over the next four days. Meanwhile, fishermen are advised not to venture off the coast, said the IMD warning notice.

According to IMD head scientist KS Hosalikar, the intensity of the monsoon is likely to increase over parts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra as a five-day severe warning for the state has also been declared.

IMD reports also mentioned that Maharashtra has received 27 per cent more rains than normal recorded in the months of June and July, despite the dull start to the monsoon season this year.

As per the data compiled by the weather department, the state had received 677.5 mm rainfall till July 31, which is 27 per cent more than its normal figures, a senior IMD official said.

Maharashtra had received 147.5 mm rain in June, which was 70 per cent of its normal rainfall. The Marathwada region received 61 per cent excess rainfall than usual, while Vidarbha and central Maharashtra recorded 25 and 39 per cent more showers respectively. Konkan received 6 per cent excess rainfall, the IMD data revealed.

Besides, according to data received by the regional meteorological department (RMC), Mumbai, the Santa Cruz region recorded16mm of rain on Saturday, August 6.

On the other hand, Skymet weather has stated that rains will pick up more pace on August 9, wherein heavier showers may be seen.

Mumbai had seen significant rain in the first half of July, but the second half of the month was largely dry, which caused the temperature and humidity to rise.

However, owing to heavy rainfall on Sunday, the minimum temperature recorded in Santacruz was as low as 24.2 °C and the maximum at 31.3 °C, also the relative humidity was at 95 per cent. While Colaba experienced a minimum temperature of 24.4 °C and a maximum temperature of 30.6 °C with a relative humidity of 95 per cent.

The city also witnessed good air day quality on Sunday. According to the data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), on Sunday, Mumbai recorded a ‘good’ Air Quality Index (AQI) with an AQI of 14, while other cities like Delhi, Pune, and Ahmedabad recorded an AQI of 53, 31, and 29 respectively.
