Animal lovers now will be able to adopt animals in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali for which one has to pay about three lakh rupees for a year's guardianship of a tiger and a lion, and one and a half lakh rupees for a leopard. A wild animal adoption scheme is being implemented by the park. According to this scheme, one can adopt a tiger for 3 lakh 10 thousand rupees, a lion for 3 lakh rupees, a leopard for 1 lakh 20 thousand rupees, a Wagati for a year by paying INR 50,000, Nilgai INR 30,000, and a Deer for INR 20,000.


Earlier, Minister Ramdas Athawale had adopted a leopard in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Also, social activist Sadhana Vaze has been adopting leopards for many years. Along with this, Pratap Sarnaik, actor Sumit Raghavan have also adopted animals. Also in 2021, director Shyam Benegal was also involved in the adoption scheme.

A wildlife adoption scheme has been launched in Borivali's Sanjay Gandhi National Park with the aim of increasing the closeness of the city dwellers to the wild animals that play an important role in the human chain to meet the cost of feeding and treatment of wild animals. Wildlife species from Sanjay Gandhi National Park can be adopted on a one-year contract under the Wildlife Adoption Scheme. The person who wishes to adopt has to bear the cost of feeding and treatment of the animal throughout the year. 


This scheme is not only limited to financial assistance. This aims to make common people feel love and affection towards wildlife. Also, if a wild animal is adopted, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park gives a certificate of acceptance of its guardianship to the person. A plaque with the adopter's name is placed near the animal's cage. Wildlife animals such as lions, tigers, leopards, nilgai, sheep, sambar and chital are included under this scheme.
