Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar might experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 17

As per the reports shared by the IMD, the intensity of Cyclone Tauktae will increase on Monday. Experts stated that Raigad could experience extreme rainfall accompanied by strong winds and rough sea.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, May 14, 2021, warned a few states in India regarding the Cyclone Tauktae, and the city of Mumbai and other districts in Maharashtra, experienced harsh weather conditions on Sunday, May 16, 2021. Following this, IMD has now warned that the cyclone will intensify to 'very severe cyclonic storm' that could lead to 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' on Monday, May 17, across a few districts including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar.

Sharing more information, weather experts informed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) that the city of Mumbai is not in the direct line of threat, however, the city might face strong winds and rain as the cyclone will pass through the coast.

Head SID, Climate Research and Services - IMD Pune, KS Hosalikar informed that as per the latest track forecast the cyclone, in the afternoon on May 17, could be far more than 200 km, and this could affect North Konkan; Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, where the districts could face heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Extreme rainfall is possible in Raigad, and will be accompanied by strong winds and rough sea.

BMC reported that the city experience light rainfall on Saturday, May 15, 2021, and did not received rainfall on Sunday, but the weather was windy.

But understanding the intensity of the cyclone, officials reviewed the preparedness across Mumbai and asked the citizens to follow the instructions given by the BMC.
