After a week of continual rainfall, the city of Mumbai is reportedly to receive only light downpour over the next two days.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the rainfall is likely to pick up the pace once again from June 17 with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in Mumbai and adjoining areas like Thane and Palghar. In view of the situation, anticipating an increased probability of landslides, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked residents at 10 locations in S ward, covering Bhandup, Powai and Vikhroli areas, to evacuate and move to safer places.

Meanwhile, Mumbai has received 94 per cent of its average rainfall in June. Moreover, the constant downpour continued, waterlogging the streets of the island city. Moreover, with showers continuing, the average precipitation is likely to be covered in the first fortnight of June itself. Since June 1, 474mm rainfall has been recorded in the city against the average monthly total of 505mm. In addition, meteorologists have reportedly stated that as much as 338mm of that is above normal for the period.

Furthermore, in the 24 hours ending on Thursday morning, the total rainfall recorded at the IMD Santacruz observatory touched 231.3mm, which falls in the extremely heavy rain category. About 222mm of that had fallen in the 12 hours between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm on Wednesday. The rainfall between June 9 and 10 has clearly surpassed last year’s highest June one-day rain of 65mm on June 6.
