India Metrological Department (IMD)’s Mumbai stations have recorded a slight dip in the day temperature today, May 2, in addition to a partially cloudy weather. However, despite this, Mumbaikars observed a discomfort due to high humidity between 72-89 per cent.

According to IMD’s Santacruz and Colaba observatory, the city’s maximum temperature has been recorded as 34.2 degrees Celsius, whereas the minimum temperature was at 27.6 and 26.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, the weather department has predicted that the heatwave conditions will prevail in Vidarbha and Marathwada for the next few days and has appealed to the citizens to keep safe and take precautions. Similarly, IMD Nagpur has issued an orange alert for Chandrapur and Akola up to May 5.

Maharashtra’s Brahmapuri and Chandrapur remain the hottest in the state, ranking 14th and 15th on the list of hottest places in the world, respectively. On Sunday, May 1, the maximum temperatures in Brahmapuri and Chandrapur, both in Vidarbha region, were 46.2 and 46 degrees Celsius, respectively.

There were also instances of the temperature rising above 45 degrees. Chandrapur became the first place in Vidarbha on April 29 to cross the 45-degree Celsius mark.

Albeit, there are also two consecutive western disturbances expected to pass over north India and influence the climate in Maharashtra bringing respite cooling down the temperatures.

Moreover, as per reports, nearly 25 people have died due to heatstroke in Maharashtra this year so far. This has been the highest death rate in the last 6 years. Data from the health department showed over 374 cases of heat stroke have been reported in March and April, although experts say the actual number could be much higher.
