Amid rising concerns over poor air quality in Mumbai, the city’s Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar on Wednesday, November 1, directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to set up a command-and-control centre.

The centre will be monitoring Air Quality Index (AQI) to send out alerts and advisories to Mumbaikars on days when the levels deteriorate into ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ category.

BMC’s environment department official exclaimed that the command and control centre will gather information through sensor-based AQI monitoring devices. These devices will be installed in several pockets to record hyperlocal data.

This announcement was made by Kesarkar while addressing a press conference at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters.

With this, they aim to have a much improved data system that will alert residents whenever any pocket in Mumbai records ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ AQI and, based on observations, health alerts or public advisories can be issued.

It is pertinent to note that Mumbai reported relatively better AQI levels compared to Delhi. Areas like Chakala- Andheri (East), Mumbai – Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (T2) recorded AQI levels of 74 (‘satisfactory’), and 144 (‘moderate’), respectively. However, some areas, including Chembur and Kherwadi, experienced ‘poor’ air quality with AQI values of 222.
