Mumbaikars began 2022 on a very unusual note as the city experienced cooler January than in 2021 with the average daily minimum temperature settling at 18.3 degrees Celsius, down from 19.2 degrees in the year before.
Experts stated that for Mumbai, the average maximum and minimum temperatures for January stand at 31.1°C and 17.3°C, respectively, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Santacruz observatory.
However, in January 2022, Mumbai’s average maximum temperature (until Jan 28, 2022) was recorded at 30°C, while the average minimum temperature was 18.4°C.
According to reports, Mumbai’s lowest daily minimum reading of 13.2 degrees Celsius (recorded on January 10) this year was also lower than the 14.8 degrees Celsius recorded on January 29, 2021.
Besides, the average daily maximum dipped from 30.6 degrees Celsius last year to 30.2 degrees Celsius last month.
Hence, the cooler-than-normal January 2022 can primarily be attributed to the drop in the maximum daytime temperatures rather than the minimum temperatures. Moreover, the humidity was also quite low, which added to the winter feel, stated experts.
Earlier, the IMD officials attributed January’s weather conditions to the influence of two western disturbances which brought rains to the city on January 8 and January 22, with a dust event following with strong winds. As it rained at a time when temperatures are anyway coolest in the year.
Moreover, the weather department also mentioned that it was the wettest January with marking just above 4.5 mm of rain.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, February 2, the minimum temperature in the city rose to 17.5 degrees Celsius, from 14.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, February 1.
