There’s some good news coming through from Navi Mumbai, wherein the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) commissioner Annasaheb Misal apparently saved 28 trees from being cut at the proposed Thane Creek Bridge (TCB-III) project. The proposed felling was planned in the route near the Vashi end of TCB-III where a few existing toll plazas are being shifted.

Explaining how the commissioner saved the trees from being cut, executive engineer of MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation) S S Jagtap said that upon a routine visit to the spot by the commissioner and further analysis, it was discovered that the work could be concluded without cutting any trees in the area.

Speaking to the Times of India, the commissioner Annasaheb Misal said “The proposal was before the tree authority committee, but I wanted to keep myself abreast with the site. It was a planned visit. Both Mumbai and Pune corridor sites have trees but there are old trees such as Gulmohar, Peepal and rain trees in large numbers on the Pune corridor side.”

The portion of the Vashi bridge that comes under the NMMC’s jurisdiction was originally expected to see the removal of 305 trees for its construction. The MSRDC has now submitted a fresh proposal for the cutting of 277 trees. L&T has been contracted for the construction of this bridge.
