According to the latest report filed by TOI, the flights that will operate from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will face a threat from birds, but the civil aviation regulator seems to be unaware of the hazard, experts suggested.

In a Right to Information (RTI) filed on the subject by B N Kumar, Director of NatConnect Foundation, with Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), it received a blank response mentioning the information sought is not available with the Directorate of Air Safety.

The new airport is coming up on and around the wetlands where migratory birds come every year and have always been their habitat, reports stated.

Besides, the experts mentioned that a bird monitoring system will be required to ascertain their flight path and movements during tidal hours at such sites.

Meanwhile, in another report by Bombay Natural History Society, Coastal wetlands and waterbirds of Navi Mumbai has also raised concerns.

The report was prepared by Sameer Bajaru, Mrugank Prabhu, Rahul Khot and Dr Deepak Apte. It says that the loss of this wetland will pose an extremely high risk of bird hazard to NMIA.

Reportedly, the construction of the airport is expected to commence by end of August, after Adani Airport took over the reins from GVK Power and Infrastructure of Mumbai International Airport as well as NMIA. The new airport is expected to be ready only in 2024.
