On Tuesday, July 5, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded Mumbai's weather warning from a "yellow" alert that indicates "moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places" to an "orange alert" till July 9 which depicts " heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places", reports stated.
Based on accounts, forecasts predict that certain isolated locations may attain "extremely heavy rain" over 200 mm in a single day. At the same time, however, they say that rain intensity will reduce for a short duration between July 6 and July 7. It may pick up again around July 8. This is when a fresh low-pressure area is anticipated to form in the Bay of Bengal.
Tuesday witnessed intense downpours across Mumbai, with IMD's base weather station in Santacruz registering 124.2 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. On the other hand, the Colaba observatory saw 117.4 mm of rain in the same period.
According to narratives, Tuesday's intense rains have balanced the city's monsoon deficit. With the aggregate seasonal rainfall of 885.8 mm since June 1, Mumbai's base weather station registered 22 per cent more rain than the usual 720 mm up to July 5.
Further, Maharashtra made up for its rainfall deficit this season. It recorded 227.9 mm of rains as opposed to the usual 260 mm averages across all meteorological sub-divisions.
