The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in some places of Mumbai and Thane for Friday and Saturday. Separately, the IMD has sent out an orange alert for Palghar with heavy rains expected in some regions on Saturday. The rain alert for Mumbai on Saturday too was upgraded to orange.

The city was greeted with rains during the wee hours of Friday with Chembur recording the highest rainfall (94mm) between 9 AM to 3 PM. IMD data also showed that some regions of Navi Mumbai and Thane saw approximately 40 to 70mm of rainfall in the same time period.

After heavy to moderate rainfall, it is expected that there may not be much activity on Monday. IMD has predicted that on Monday, the rains to remain light to moderate. Furthermore, the intensity is expected to go down even further from Tuesday.

“The low-pressure weather system over west Madhya Pradesh adjoining Rajasthan is allowing rain intensity to be more over northwestern parts of the country including Rajasthan and Gujarat. Peripheral showers are being witnessed along the north Konkan coast including Palghar and Raigad,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general, western region IMD.

Commenting on the weather conditions in Mumbai, he further said, A bright sunny morning in Mumbai today after a long while.  In the coming 24 to 48 hrs sky in Mumbai would remain partly cloudy and the city can experience occasional showers.
